Beyond Vocal Study and Repertoire
A productive and enjoyable singing lesson involves much more than good repertoire and vocal exercises. Young singers thrive when lessons are engaging, interactive, and carefully paced to match their energy and attention. This course looks at how play-based learning and intentional lesson design can help you capture students’ interest, maintain momentum, and create learning experiences that keep singers actively involved from beginning to end.

Engagement isn’t the same as compliance. A student who follows instructions isn’t necessarily engaged. True engagement means students are thinking, participating, and connecting with the learning. In this clip, we begin to unpack what teachers can do to create lessons that truly capture students’ attention.

Meet Nikki Loney
Inspired by the youngest students in her private voice studio, Nikki Loney challenges teachers to redefine what a singing lesson looks like for a child. Nikki has been teaching children singing for 35 years in private voice lessons and small group classes. (Her favourite singers are 7 to 10 years old.) This training was absolutely everything I needed and more! With a whole host of new 6 year old students, I was feeling the pressure of keeping things fun, but still productive throughout the entire year. Now, I have plenty of new ideas, strategies to keep both students and their parents engaged and a better understanding of what I can continue to work on as a teacher.

I just wanted to reach out and say a genuine thank you. Whilst being a singing teaching student, I'm also a fully qualified child clinical psychologist of many years! Your lectures have literally had me beaming. More than that, I tried some of your ideas in my singing assembly with about 150 5-7 year olds this morning and I've never heard them sing so beautifully. Looking forward to exploring more of your resources!

This was HANDS AND FEET DOWN the best and most helpful training I have taken in the past 5 years... I would highly recommend this teacher training for anyone working with small children who gets frustrated easily or needs help with lesson/classroom management, or is wondering how to increase engagement and incorporate more play and a sense of wonder into lessons for kids - even kids of ALL ages!
